The problem
Students compare a starting salary or a tuition sticker price. Neither says what a path is worth over twenty years.
What I built
- 01A pure TypeScript engine with progressive federal brackets, FICA, state tax, loan amortization and life events such as a home purchase with a mortgage and appreciating equity.
- 02A scenario band ordered by construction, with tests that prove conservative is never above optimistic in any year, life events included.
- 03One SVG chart for web and native: a band per path, break-even markers, a diamond for each life event, and drag to inspect any year.
- 04Sharing with no backend: the whole comparison is encoded into a versioned URL that never throws on bad input, and an import re-keys every path so it cannot collide.
- 05A school lookup through an edge function that keeps the key on the server and falls back to a bundled list when the data source does not answer.

Decisions
A score that ignores the comparison
The Path Score blends upside, break-even speed, downside safety and education cost against fixed anchors. A path scores the same no matter what it is compared with.
The link is the database
A shared comparison lives entirely in its URL. There is no account to create and nothing to store, so sharing works on day one.
Not claimed
- Projections, not financial advice.
- Not in the app stores. It is built on Expo, so the same code can compile to native.
- The live search over every US school needs a server key and is not claimed as on. The films use the bundled list.
